The opioid crisis is an example of a current epidemic in the United States. The initial rise in opioid deaths in 1999 is linked to overprescribing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011), while the second wave of deaths beginning in 2010 involved an increase in heroin usage (Rudd, et al., 2014), and the third wave in 2013 involved an increase in synthetic opioids (ODonnell, et al., 2017). According to DeWeerdt (2019), the roots of the epidemic may be traced back to a few practices in the 1980s and 1990s, including a new emphasis on non-cancerous chronic pain treatment, financial incentives for physicians to prescribe opioids, a lack of physician experience in pain management, pharmaceutical marketing to physicians and consumers, and a covering up or downplaying of the potential for addiction of prescription opioids.
