Determinants of health contribute to a persons current state of health, such as biological factors, psychological factors, behavioral factors, and social factors. Social determinants refer to the conditions in which people grow, live, and work in their environment (Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2017). Factors that would influence his decision to seek medical care are access to medical care services, access to social media, literacy, and socioeconomic conditions. First and foremost, access to medical care services can refer to proximity and affordability (Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2017). Migrant farmworkers today are documented as permanent residences or are lawfully present. Because of their temporary or unauthorized status, they cannot receive health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (Migrant Clinicians Network, 2017). Second, access to social media is another factor that would influence the decision in seeking medical care because it is a source of valuable health-related information, including appointment reminders and learning about symptoms. Language and literacy can also influence a farm workers decision to seek medical care because of the barrier it poses; it can discourage them from seeking any help due to the lack of cultural competency and lack of improvement in literacy (Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2017). Finally, socioeconomic conditions are linked to many factors; one of the best-known examples is poverty and poor health. Financial hardship affects the livelihood of those who cannot make ends meet. In this scenario, multiple migrant farmworkers are more likely to suffer mortality and morbidity rates because of their poverty status, little to no access to health care services, and the lack of regulations (Migrant Clinicians Network, 2017).
Some laws can perpetuate social determinants of health, negatively affecting individuals physical, mental, and emotional well-being (Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2017). For example, mostly since discrimination and systematic racism have long played a role in healthcare and how diverse populations receive the best health care can affect their overall quality of life. Some healthcare providers refuse to accept patients under Medicaid because Medicaid tends to low-income and people of color. A policy recommendation I would make to alleviate health determinants towards migrant farmworkers is to improve the work conditions and eliminate any safety hazards to reduce injuries. I would also suggest having policies that address health inequities, especially for unauthorized workers in the U.S, so that these determinants would not place such a burden on these farmworkers.
