Rutgers University Mental Health in Athletics Research
Description
It is difficult to recognize mental health concerns and issues at times, unless a person directly comes to you and lays out their symptoms and asks for help. Most of the time the concerns and symptoms do not present all together in a neat package, all together at once, or if at all. The purpose of this assignment is to make you familiar with observing mental health related symptoms, forming a plan of action based on information and symptoms provided/observed, and being able to look at and plan for obstacles in attaining and/or providing mental health support. This assignment assumes you are not a mental health practitioner and addresses this issue from the perspective of a professional working in athletics in another capacity.
1. Create comprehensive separate lists of depression symptoms and a separate list of anxiety symptoms. Make sure to cite where you get your information for list development. It is best that you use scholarly references. You may need to use two or more resources to make the list comprehensive. You may research and find a plan or flow Chart that you feel encompasses the correct information. One that you could use in the future. You can also reference Mental Health Decision Tree in this weeks reading. You can put the actual resource you would use on the paper. You MUST cite where you get your information.
5. Identify and create two separate lists of obstacles that may be faced as a professional and as the Athlete when assisting an athlete who you feel may have mental health concerns.Make sure that each separate list has at least 3 items on it. In essence, what obstacles do you foresee in following through with a mental health plan?
