Annemarie Martin, a 14 -year-old middle school girl who currently lives with her father,younger sister, and older brother. Her mother has been deployed overseas for the past 6 months.Lately, Annemaries grades have been falling and she has been spending a lot of time in herroom. Last evening when Mr. Martin talked to her, she told him she was being bullied by somegirls at school who didnt like her. He told her to talk to the teacher at school and just stand upto them. When she told him she had tried to do this he replied, I dont have the time or energyto deal with this right now. Ive got an early morning meeting to get ready forwell talk aboutthis later.She tells her best friend at school that she is fed up with everything and Dad just doesnt get it! Icant do this anymore; maybe Ill just kill myself. Her friends response is casual, You dontwant to do that. Ill talk to you tomorrow.That afternoon when she goes home, she gives her favorite doll to her younger sister and tells herbrother he can have her prized skateboard. She goes to her room, which has been her habit forseveral weeks. When Mr. Martin arrives home, he calls out hello but gets no response fromAnnemarie. He sits down to read the paper, awaiting delivery of a pizza. When he calls everyoneto the table, there is still no answer from Annemarie and he asks the brother to go let Annemarieknow supper is on the table.Her brother comes running back down the stairs, saying, in an agitated voice, that she wontwake up. Mr. Martin runs up to her room and is alarmed to see that Annemarie is unresponsiveand there is an empty prescription bottle on the bed that had contained medication her brotherwas prescribed for attention deficit disorder. 911 is called and Annemarie is taken to the hospitalwhere her stomach is pumped and she is admitted to the hospital for observation and apsychiatric evaluation in the morning.
