Evidence based practice is an activity and not a mindset. A mindset is more of an attitude that a person holds which shapes personal behavior. Our mindset can determine whether or not we initially agree or disagree with something before we know the entire story. However, evidence based practice is a multidisciplinary problem-solving approach that takes into consideration a patient’s values and preferences and an individual’s clinical expertise when making decisions about a patient’s care (Katowa-Mukwato, 2021). When nurses question why something is done or why negative outcomes are frequently occurring, is when the formulation of PICO questions arise and data begins to be collected. Resulting research data from clinical studies or trials is what provides the evidence that supports the decisions that are made, by either changing how or what we do or continuing to do what we do. As nurses, we often tend to perform routine activities or tasks without questioning why we are doing it because as novice nurses we may have been told “this is the way it is done”. However, in today’s world, we must question everything we do to make sure that the delivery of care that is rendered is in the best interest of the patient, is cost-effective for the institution, and promotes further research in nursing.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the act of finding and applying the research findings into the nursing practice and in all clinical-decision making for each patient. (Wilson & Austria, 2021, para. 2). EBP is hard to determine whether it is an activity or a mindset because it helps whoever is using it to make decisions and to continue to change your mindset by implementing the new data found into practice. Making the decision about EBP, it is more of an activity. The reason it is an activity is due to not only gathering the proven data but actually using that evidence for decision-making for patients’ issues and putting it into practice to give a more efficient and effective patient care. (Scott & McSherry, 2009 as cited in Li et al., 2019, p. 2). EBP goes through three different phases that are practice question, evidence, and translation. (OHSU Clinical Inquiry Council, 2021, para, 7). There first needs to be an issue and/or concern brought up about a patient that needs to be resolved. Once that question of what needs to be resolved is in place, researching what the best evidence that will help that issue and/or concern the best. Lastly, putting it into action by developing a plan of care that will be used to help evaluate the outcomes. This will be able to not only see what is working based off the proven evidence but also what is not working in order to continue to change the activity of EBP to provide the best quality and patient care and for the best outcome. Using EBP not only creates health care workers to continue to search for the best evidence-based information but it ultimately is an activity to continue to take time out to search and implement them in daily practice.
