Discussion 10.1 Learning Theories
What theory (theories) do you see embedded in the narrative?  Wright’s Law: A Unique Teacher Imparts Real Life Lessons was an inspiring video about a teacher who always had a captivated audience because he understood that in order to educate his students, they had to want to learn (The New York Times, 2012).  The narrative suggests that Mr. Wright used a Humanistic Theory approach to teaching.  By using a Humanistic Theory, this teacher imparts knowledge that will help students develop to their full potential because those are mutually exclusive goals(McEwen & Wills, 2019).   At one point in the video the instructor gives an example of the birth of his second child, then uses that to illustrate a point in science (The New York Times, 2012).  By using an emotional component, Jeffrey was able to draw in their attention and create an interpersonal relationship with the students while at the same time circling back to the lesson he was illustrating.  In addition, there appears to be an element of Cognitive-Field Theory.  This theory is based on the belief that the learners’ perception of their environmental experiences is the driver behind obtaining and retaining information (McEwen & Wills, 2019).  The students perceive the teacher to be caring, quirky, unique and smart and therefore want to part of that educational experience.
What concepts within the theory apply and how? One of the concepts of Humanistic Theory is that there is an intrinsic desire to learn the information and apply that so the learner can develop to their full potential (McEwen & Wills, 2019).  This is evident based on some of the interviews with his students.  Humanistic Theory can also be valuable in healthcare.  University of Toronto developed a patient-as-teacher program that used a humanistic approach to teach surgical residents how to be more patient focused verses skill-set focused (Simpson et al., 2020). The program was designed to help the surgical clerks better understand illnesses from the patient’s experiences and let them gauge their sensitives accordingly.  Like Mr. Wright, teaching or learning based on emotions with personal values helped the surgical residents understand the patient’s perspective.
From the point of Cognitive-Field Theory, learning based on the learners perceptions and experiences can be another valuable tool for nurses.  Perception and self-actualization was an important element in one study that examined how nursing students perceived their role as patient educator and the value that role with regard to their patients  (Richard et al., 2018). How the nursing students perceived their role and the tools they had for teaching impacted the delivery of information to the patient.
