The Birth of Humanism and the Reformers movement
The Renaissance Humanism movement was an intellectual movement that originated in the 13th Century and lasted for about 300 years. The movement was founded on the principles of giving a worldlier feel to the surroundings and the people. It was thus named the ‘Birth of Venus’ and seen as the movement that would usher new ideas, principles, and brighten the world. During the 14th century, a cultural movement called humanism began to gain momentum in Italy. Having far-reaching political, economic, and social effects, the Reformation became the basis for the founding of Protestantism, one of the three major branches of Christianity. Among its many principles, humanism promoted the idea that man was the center of his own universe, and people should embrace human achievements in education, classical arts, literature and science. Humanists operating before Petrarch, called “Proto-Humanists,” that operated between 1240-1309. The period was also marked with extreme human creativity in art, languages, and scientific inventions that were mean to mark a new beginning.
One of the defining elements of the Renaissance humanism is the inclusive critical thinking that ushered in a new dimension of problem solving in the society. Additionally, the era accelerated the creation of new aspects of derived ideas that were compounded on social, economic, and political spheres (Seigel 7). Perhaps, the Renaissance may be the root of the Greek methodology and arithmetic that broadly influenced the creation of problem solving and academic ideas. Most importantly, the Renaissance humanism period laid the foundation to the modern science as it created the path and outlet for new ideas, ingenious concepts, and even calculations. Another defining aspects of humanism is the broad thinking that led to the broad and diverse ideas that was critical in the transformation that Europe was seeking (Ndlovu-Gatsheni 330). Key figures in this period are like Francesco Petrarch (1304–1374) who was regarded as the Father of Italian Humanism due to his contribution in the ideology and its growth.
One thing to remember is that the Renaissance humanism did not only derive and pave way for liberal and creative thinking but also allowed for integrated approach to solution seeking (Overell 10). Interestingly, some of the ideas in this period were generated by people who tried to look for solutions that faced mankind in the society. The period can thus be termed as the transition to a cohesive and creative thinking that allowed mankind to see the world in a new dimension with a better problem-solving approach (Ozment 11). As an intellectual movement that originated in the 13th century and came to dominate European thought during the Renaissance, the period came to typify the modern ideas that were essential in progressive growth.
The Greek and Roman texts help show how the humanism period was invented and its impact in the society. To broaden this approach, the Greek were already making progress in key academic areas that are even today key parts of the academic field (Ndlovu-Gatsheni 323). For example, the invention of calculations, Calculus was known as the pivot to the today’s engineering that is the center of the global development (Overell 7). It is thus right to say that the Renaissance Humanism period is at the heart of today’s world and the period is thus inter-connected in abroad way. To create the right outlook into the human development and social compounds of the society, the humanism period created gateways to new ways of thinking and problem solving (Seigel 5). A case in point is where the political and religious leaders welcomed new ideas and even supported those who appeared to draw from the same well in terms of political and social ideas.
The onset of the Reformers movement was seen as a religious centered wave that sought to remove radical religious ideas and teachings. The key purpose of the Reformers movement unlike the political and social movement was to create a new perceptive in religious matters that were enshrined within Christianity (Ndlovu-Gatsheni 305). The reformers movement was also built around inclusive approach to religious matters that even involved removing and editing some of the texts that had for centuries remained at the heart of Christianity. The reformers movement was therefore more of a religious wave rather than social, economic, or political drive (Seigel 12). One thing that created some similarity between the reformers movement and other movements is that the drove was centered and pushed by influential people who are believed to have been the epicenter to today’s Christianity.
The Reformers Movement removed the unreligious stigma from the body of Christianity that was previously thought to have been a hinderance to the inclusive and liberal thinking. The reformers believed that the religious stigma that was enshrined within the rigid teachings was already a danger to the growth and excellence of Christianity as a religion. The reformers saw a need to break the chains and create a new outlook that would not appear so rigid and complex to the followers of the faith. The October 31, 1517, the eve of All Saints’ Day was marked as the traditional date for the beginning of the Reformation. The events surrounding the reformers movement were grounded in Church that was also based on the common outlook of faith and Christianity teachings of that time.
